The Blue-crowned Manakin is a species of bird in the Pipridae family.

Physical Description

These are compact forest birds. They are typically brightly colored, with an indigo blue on the plumage upperparts and red on the breast. The head is a darker purple with a white ring around the eye.

Diet

Manakins feed on small fruits, berries, and insects.

Habitat

It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and suffering forestry due to agriculture and colonization.

Reproduction

The Manakin species have spectacular lek rituals where the male does an elaborate dance making buzzing, snapping, and other sounds with their wings to impress the female Manakin. Nest building and incubation lasts 18-21 days, and the female takes care of the young alone because Manakins do not form stable pairs. The normal clutch is two eggs.
