General Information

Also known as "loro cariamarillo" in Spanish, the Red-lored is a species of parrot in the Psittacidae family.

Physical Description

It is 32-35 cm in length, with a weight of 310-480 g. The plumage is green all over, with red forehead, and yellow cheeks sometimes with red spots. The crown is thick and blue. Adult males and females do not differ in plumage. Young, however, have less yellow on their cheeks and less red on their forehead.

Diet

The Red-lored Parrot prefers fruits, nuts, and seeds. In contrast, it is said that avocado, eggplant and grapes are poisonous for them.

Habitat

The Red-lored Parrot is native to tropical regions of the Americas, from eastern Mexico to Ecuador, with a distinct population in central Brazil, where it occurs in humid evergreen to semi-deciduous forests up to 1100 m altitude.

Reproduction

The nest is usually in tree cavities. The females will lay up to three or four white eggs in their nesting area, and the incubation time varies from 25 to 26 days. The chicks stay in the nest from 21 to 70 days.
