General Information

The Speckled Chachalaca is a species of bird in the Cracidae family.

Physical Description

These are large birds, similar to the appearance of a turkey. The smaller Chachalacas are found in open scrubby habitats while the larger Guans and Currasows are normally found in treetops. Many birds in this species are fairly long tailed, which may be an aide to navigating through the trees. They are generally dull in the color of their plumage. The Chachalaca can be as small as 15 in and 12.5 oz.

Diet

These species feed on fruit, insects and worms.

Habitat

It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, moist lowland forests, and forests that have been tarnished from farming and colonization.

Reproduction

The nest is built in a tree either at a splitting branch or at the top of a tree. The female will lay two to three large white eggs and will incubate them without the help of the male Chachalaca at all.
