General Information
This bird is quite intelligent and tame. They are very social birds that live in groups. They are normally seen in pairs or small flocks, but can also be spotted in groups of hundreds.
Physical Description
The Yellow-crowned parrot will grow between 35 and 37 cm long. Its plumage is primarily green, with a yellow face and crown, a pale bill, white eye-ring and a red flash on the shoulder at the bend of the wing. Adult males and females don't differ in plumage. The young parrots have a yellow color that is centralized on the fore-crown and lack the red at the bend of the wing.
Diet
They prefer to eat fruit, nuts, seeds, and berries.
Habitat
This is a species of parrot that is native to the Americas with sub species occurring from Mexico south to Peru and Brazil. California, Florida, and Puerto Rico are home to some of its sub-species, oratrix. It is a bird of tropical or deciduous woodland, thorn scrubs, pine forest, mangroves, pine savannah and can be found on cultivated land in urban areas of lowlands.
Reproduction
The Yellow-crowned parrot reproduces the same way as other parrots, laying 3-4 eggs and incubating around 25 days. The chicks will stay in the nest from 21-70 days.
