Ajos sacha is a one of about 15 species in the Mansoa taxon, most of which have a garlic scent. “Ajo sacha” means wild or forest garlic. This vine grows from the root in the shape of multiple shrubs about three meters tall. It is native to the Amazon rainforest and is distributed throughout tropical South America.
Ajos sacha is also quite well known and popular in the cities and towns in the Amazon and has a long history of use in herbal medicine systems in Peru and Brazil. In addition, its history of use is equally extensive in tribal medicine by many indigenous Amazonian Indian tribes. Leaves, vine bark, and roots are all used in preparations. It bears a flower with varying shades of purple, lavender and almost white.
Ajos sacha is commonly used in the Amazon to alleviate pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism, as well as treatment for colds, flu, and fever. It is also being used for these remedies in alternative medicine circles in the modern world.
This plant is known as garlic vine in the United States. It is frequently used to add flavor to prepared dishes. Its leaves are dried and crushed, then mixed with other ingredients resulting in a tasty culinary treat with a distinct garlic odor. Residents of southern United States may grow this vine outdoors; it may grow indoors as a potted plant as well, so long as it is not subjected to freezing temperatures.
Ajos Sacha has many spiritual uses, and is a favorite with hunters. Ritual purification of the fisherman's body, tools, and canoes with Ajos Sacha assures a good catch. Ajos Sacha can be found as one ingredient in the potion shamans mix for use in spiritual ceremonies known as Ayahuasca.
Ajos Sacha traditionally is used as a herbal bath in a cleansing ritual called 'limpias' throughout the Amazon rainforest.
